Introduction

There may be instances when you need to send a mix of transactional and marketing emails, and would want your recipients to choose what emails they want to receive. This can be achieved with some of the features available on Customer.io.

Problem

Some users have expressed their need to categorize marketing emails to allow their customers to selectively unsubscribe from specific types of these emails. For example - they want users to have an option to opt out of marketing and upsell messages, but they still need to receive their transaction receipts and password reset emails.

Solution

By understanding the different types of journey offerings available in Customer.io, you can easily segregate between marketing content and transactional content.

Our traditional campaign feature should be used for your marketing content. The feature is designed to provide a huge amount of flexibility in building out a journey of your desired length, channel mixture, and much more.

Transactional messages via our dedicated transactional API should be reserved for one-off tasks like receipts or password reset requests, rather than for marketing communications. It can be tempting to use the transactional API for marketing content, because the nature of transactional messages tends to drive higher engagement. But misuse here may lead to loss of trust with your audience or even reports of spam.

To cater to the needs of allowing recipients to selectively unsubscribe from different types of marketing emails, we recommend using the Subscription Center feature. Through this feature, you can set up different topics (ie, Transactional or Marketing) that your customers can subscribe or unsubscribe to according to their preferences.
